About Liam Ryan Architectural Services
Our office is located in the Heritage town of Abbeyleix in Co. Laois. We are situated not just adjacent to the expanding urban centres of Portlaoise and Portarlington but adjacent to the rural hinterland of Laois, Offaly, North Tipperary, Kildare and Kilkenny. It is from the rural areas that much of the business comes in the form of the much-derided one-off house.
Liam Ryan founded his practice in 1997. The company’s basic premise is that we are designing "homes for people". Liam remembers being shocked during the Celtic Tiger when developers spoke of "units" and "illusionary spaces". The practice is very conscious that the house is more than a building; it is a home for living, sleeping, eating, and relaxing. As such it is deserving of our utmost consideration, especially in terms of orientation and siting. First and foremost the home must be bright; it must be open to the sun and where possible take full advantage of the beautiful and varied landscape of Laois and surrounding counties.
Extensions pose a particular challenge often requiring the clients courage to take that leap of faith and move the kitchen from its dark enclosure to an invigoratingly bright and spacious area that will add hugely to the comfort of the home.
The practice has a strong sense of environmental awareness and strongly encourages clients in terms of energy conservation, renewal energy and sustainability.
The practice has designed a number of successfully completed housing schemes, notable examples being Glenbrook in Ballyroan and Clarneyhall in Rathdowney, both in Co. Laois. Liam Ryan Architectural Services design the house or the scheme of houses and carry the project through the full planning process. The Practice also does work in the Commercial area; designing factories, warehouses etc.
Liam Ryan Architectural Services is qualified to carry out the new EPA style percolation tests, which assess the suitability of ground conditions to safely absorb effluent from a septic tank. They have recently completed training regarding Disability Access Certificates and offer the full range of usual services including Fire Safety Certificates; they also hold the necessary Professional Indemnity Insurance to carry out inspections during the course of construction.
